Teenagers are active here at Wake Forest United Methodist Church. Youth in grades 6-12 make up the United Methodist Youth.
Our regular program coincides with the traditional school calendar. We “kick-off” with parents and youth in the fall, and fellowship with parents once more in January to get ready for spring. We generally meet on Sunday nights from 6:00 – 7:30 PM, following the church-wide dinner. These Sunday night programs include worship, games, speakers, and lessons.
In addition to Sunday night programs, we schedule a variety of other opportunities for fellowship, fundraisers, missions and outreach, which sometimes replace regular Sunday night programs.
Missions
Some of the missions our youth have participated in are:
Hosting a community Thanksgiving dinner Delivering meals and doing yard work for older church members
Walking to raise money for hunger relief
Volunteering in facilities for special needs children
Visiting nursing homes
Volunteering at MERCI relief center sorting clothes to ship overseas and organizing building supplies stored on-site for local projects
Making gleaning bags for SOSA (Society of St. Andrews)
Service
Youth collaborate with other church groups to host a children’s carnival in the fall, as well as Santa’s Shop where children can purchase and wrap Christmas gifts for family & friends. The youth also share their faith by planning and leading the worship services one Sunday each year.
Spiritual Enrichment
We are blessed by the spiritual enrichment experienced at conference-sponsored events like Pilgrimage, the SEJD Jubilee events at Lake Junaluska, ACS, and Breakaway. We also have retreats in nature settings, from the ocean to the mountains, and lock-ins at the church. The youth also share their faith by planning and leading the worship services one Sunday each year.
The youth are able to participate in all of these activities as a result of three types of funding: (1) a line item of the general fund budget; (2) fundraisers such as church dinners, car washes, yard sales, and talent shows; and (3) from support given by our families.
Beyond High School
Our youth are not forgotten when they go off to college or pursue a career in the military. WFUMC supports our college students and military personnel by sending them Upper Room devotionals; by mailing letters, care packages and the church newsletter; and by providing scholarships for one or more rising college freshman.
