The History of Wake Forest United Methodist Church
As Told By Dorothy Becton
(Presented to the Congregation on September 27, 1987)
I became a member of the Old Rolesville Methodist Episcopal Church in the summer of 1925. We had a small congregation. And at that time we had services once a month, but we were proud of our church. My Mother had joined this church before she was married and all of my older brothers and sisters were members (my Father was a Baptist). Several of us did attend the Baptist church for Sunday School and Youth Meetings when it did not conflict with the Methodist services.
Our move to Wake Forest was a good one. We had a better opportunity for growth and did increase our membership. It was nice to have enough people to have Sunday School and Epworth League (for the youth – this was our UMFY). Our Sunday School grew – we had two classes in the Fellowship Room below this Sanctuary, two classes in the room which is now the Seekers Classroom, one in the room at the foot of the stairs, and classes in the three rooms on this floor in back of this Sanctuary. So, you can see we really have grown.
The Education Building was built in 1972 or 1973. This was a lot of room – could we fill it? And in March of 1986, we moved into this – our renovated Sanctuary.
Macon and I are new person greeters and we enjoy meeting the new people and others, as they enter on Sunday mornings for Worship. And it makes us very happy when these new people decide to make this there church home. I hope that these people will feel the pride and joy as we do, in being a part of this church.
